The four main risk
factors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) are tobacco use, unhealthy diet,
physical inactivity, and harmful use of alcohol. 80% of premature deaths from
CVD can be avoided if those risk factors are controlled. Tobacco use and
exposure to secondhand smoke kill 6 million people each year, and they cause
almost 10% of CVD cases. If you stop smoking, within two years your risk of
coronary heart disease is reduced. Within 15 years, your risk of CVD is similar
to non-smokers.
